WERNER DEMITROWITZ ADJUSTS MODELS OF C-54 SKY MASTER BOMBERS IN BERLIN, 1998-05-11 (photo)

Werner Demitrowitz 70, adjusts models of C-54 Sky master bomber airplanes on a scale of 1:144 in a reconstruction of the scene at Gatow Airport from which Allied pilots orchestrated the famous Berlin Airlift May 11. Demitrowitz assisted in building the runway at Gatow in 1947. The C-54 Sky master bombers which supplied West-Berlin with vital supplies such as food, fuel and scarce medicines helped to defeat the Soviet blockade in 1948 and 1949. U.S. President Bill Clinton will visit the reunified Germany on May 13 and 14, to mark the 50th anniversary of the American and British Airlift. FAB/AA
