The Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts, in the foreground, was opened in 1868 as German Commercial Museum in Berlin and is the oldest museum of its kind. The Art Library acquires and researches scientific writings on the history of European art from late antiquity to the present. The Gemäldegalerie, the Maritim Hotel Berlin, the Federal Ministry of Defence and the Bendler Block, a memorial of the German resistance, are part of the district Tiergarten.
