Piper’s Hill and Picquet House, Jellalabad, 1879 circa. Photograph, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879 circa. This photograph depicts a famous landmark from an earlier British incursion into Afghanistan. During the Siege of Jalalabad in 1842, Piper's Hill was named after an Afghan piper who continued playing despite the best efforts of British sharpshooters to kill him. From an album of 61 photographs compiled by Lieutenant-Colonel C A Mercer, 4th Gurkha Regiment, 1878-1880.
