Liberation of Europe; Commandos Pour Into Beachheads, June 1944. Photograph, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945), 1944. D-Day, 6 June 1944, marked the start of the Allied invasion of Normandy, Operation OVERLORD. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British) on 6 June. Around 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7,900 airborne troops around the perimeter of the landing areas. One of 37 British official photographs covering aspects of the preparations for and liberation of North West Europe, 1944-1945.
