Image description

In 1862, British artist and explorer Thomas Baines visited Victoria Falls and created lushly rendered paintings of the site. The 1800’s were marked by a zeal for African exploration, made easier with medical and technological advancements of the time. The work of Baines brought that adventure back home to London with fantastic color and detail. The paintings were exhibited, published as chromolithographs, and made into lantern slides.
