Left - this narwhal horn was given to the College by William Porte, fellow here in 1456. The powdered horn was supposed to be an effective antidote to poison, and when Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, visited in 1576 he asked to be given the horn as a gift. The fellows however gave him only a few inches from its tip, claiming that it had been a gift from the Founder on the condition that it should never leave the College! The longer narwhal horn was given to Oxford by the Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1965, because he liked the story about the Unicorn’s horn so much.
