Wordsworth-Smith, 1896 This vessel (1,200 tons), was wrecked on Portland Shambles, 5 February, 1805, with the loss of nearly 300 persons and a cargo valued at £200,000. The captain, who went down with it, was John Wordsworth, younger brother of the poet, who alludes to him in his 'Lines on' a 'picture of Peel Castle in a storm' and again in 'The fir grove path' and 'Nature and the' 'poet'.
