Testing completed cathode ray tubes, Mullard Ltd, 1954. Advances in broadcast television like the 1953 Coronation outside broadcast ,seen by millions of viewers, led to a rapid expansion of television receiver ownership. This grew from 20,000 in the early 1950s to several million by the end of the decade. The Mullard company dedicated a whole plant at Simonstone near Burnley to deal with the growing demand for cathode ray tubes. The plant had all the facilities to produce items on site, from glass making, to the production of the electron gun.
