Guerre des Boers (Afrique du Sud, 1899-1902): Yorkshire signaling from New Zealand Hill to Rensburg, South Africa, 1900. One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a professional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques; cameras were more portable and magazines reproduced half-tone photographs. The hills around Slingersfontein in the northern Cape Colony saw fierce fighting in early 1900. Rensburg was the headquarters of General John French. After several earlier attacks, the British and Empire troops defending New Zealand Hill were driven off by the Boers on 12th February. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
