Image description

Extracts from the log of Alcock and Brown's transatlantic flight, 1919. On 14th June 1919, with Sir Arthur Whitten Brown (1886-1948) as navigator, Sir John Alcock (1892-1919) piloted a Vickers-Vimy biplane non-stop from St John's in Newfoundland, Canada to Clifden, County Galway in Ireland, in a time of 16 hours 27 minutes. This was the first non-stop transatlantic flight, an achievement for which both men were knighted. Shortly afterwards, Alcock was killed in an aeroplane accident in France. ©SSPL/Science Museum
