Dunga Palace built around 1845, was the palace of Mohammed bin Ahmed el Alawi - the last King of the Shirazi. The Mwinyi Mkuu. "The Great Owner".
. It was an impressive two-storey structure with a mosque, baths and house. The King lived in the Palace for a short time until his death in 1865. His only son was ill and did not survive for long. Thus, without a male descendent, the line died out and the Palace was left to crumble. Between 1910 and 1914 excavations uncovered human skeletons and a set of carved wooden ceremonial drums within the ruins.
