This is one of many paintings of schoolchildren by the popular Newcastle artist Ralph Hedley. The neat appearance of the girl, concentrating on the work on her slate, contrasts with the boy beside her. He leans over to copy her work, and his ink-spotted book lies open on the floor. To the left is the edge of the teacher's desk, and hanging from it is a bunch of twigs used to punish children who had not learnt their lessons;
