Here the artist portrays one of his two sons, Henri-Gérard Fontallard, a future caricaturist, at the age of fifteen.

Inscription concerning date and author - On the back, handwritten inscription in pen: "Fontallard (Jean François Gérard) / Portrait of his son the caricaturist / Henri Fontallard (at the age of 15.) / This miniature, which won / a 1st class medal at the 1812 Salon, was exhibited / in 1906 at the Bibliothèque by / Mr Max Bugnicourt, a descendant of / Fontallard, and was sold at the Hôtel des Ventes / on April 20, 1907 (room N°6) by the / ministry of Me Lair-Dubreuil / (Paulme expert) it is reproduced / in natural size in / Mr Henri Bouchot's work / on French Miniature / (P.184)"
