British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, Called Margaret Paston, Lady Bedingfeld (c.1618-1702), British (English) School, inscribed with name of sitter, in large yellow script, b.l.: Margaret Paston, Lady Bedingfeld/Obiit 1702, circa 1640-50. A three-quarter-length portrait of a middle-aged widow, standing, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, her right hand extended and holding a closed fan. She wears a black decollete dress with lace cuffs and a transparent lace-edged fichu tied round her neck. She wears pearls at her throat, and drop-earrings and a pearl-knotted, black velvet bow at her breast. Her small, flat cap of black lace perches on a centre parting in her frizzy coiffure.
