Entry of the Turks into Baghdad, 1534 AD. Early in the thirteenth century the Turks, who were destined to found the Ottoman Empire, retreated from Central Asia before the Mongols. Three centuries later they had captured Byzantium and had occupied Egypt. Sultan Suleiman I directed his arms against Persia, and his army, after wrestling Armenia and a great part of Babylonia from the son of Shah Ismail I, entered Baghdad in 1534 AD.
