Image description

Marshal Petain and his wife crossed the Swiss border near St. Margrethen on 24 April 1945, fleeing from the Allies. Petain was interned in 1944 after the landing of the Allies in Normandy and brought to Germany (Sigmaringen Castle). In August 1945, after his return to France, Petain was sentenced to death by a French court martial for his collaboration with the German Reich. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by his successor Charles de Gaulle.
