Image description

Service dress tunic, pattern 1917, lieutenant-colonel Arthur Preston Hohler, The Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment), 1908-1920 (c). Lieutenant-colonel Hohler served in Gallipoli, Palestine and Egypt during World War One (1914-1918). Hohler was a keen horsemen and rode with the South Oxfordshire Hunt. In 1915, prior to the 2/10th Battalion The Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) leaving England for Egypt and Gallipoli, Hohler rode in the National Hunt Steeplechase at Cheltenham and in the Soldiers and Sailors’ Handicap Steeplechase at Lingfield under the pseudonym ‘Mr A Chilton’. Hohler’s Distinguised Service Order is recorded in the ‘London Gazette’ on 16 August 1917, with notification of a first bar awarded on 8 March 1919. Hohler survived the War but died soon after returning to England in 1919.
