Image description

The gateway has been decorated overhead with a sign that reads 'Welcome Home' and an Australian flag. Among the children in the front rows, a little boy stands beside his tricycle and a brown and white dog sits in front of the fence. A blacksmith prior to enlistment on 29 September 1915, Sapper Dunbar was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in 1918. His citation stated "During the operations against the Hindenburg Line on the morning of 29th September, in the neighborhood of Bellicourt, he was engaged with a party searching for enemy mines. Sapper Dunbar removed several dangerous booby traps from dugouts and assisted in the capture of many prisoners. He also detected and removed a large number of road mines. The whole of the day he worked under heavy shell and machine gun fire, during which 50 of his party became casualties". Sapper Dunbar returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 25 August
