Image description

Idaho Gem, the first sucessfully cloned mule in the world, is held by scientist Dirk Vanderwall (R) at the foal's unveiling at the University of Idaho (U.I.) in Moscow, Idaho on May 29, 2003. Also pictured (L to R) is Idaho Gem's surrogate mother mare Idaho Syringa, scientist Gordon Woods, financier Don Jacklin and scientist Ken White. This lead team of scientists from U.I.-Utah State University announced that Idaho Gem was born on May 4 after the team succesfully cloned the hybrid foal using new cloning techniques. The team started its work on this project in 1998. This scientific breakthrough may shed new light on the causes of specific cancers in humans. REUTERS/Anthony P. Bolante REUTERS APB
