Image description

Apollo tuning his chariot to Phaeton, after Poussin (Main title) Anonymous; Poussin, Nicolas Kneeling at the feet of his father, Apollo, Phaeton asks him to lend him his chariot. This subject, enriched by the personifications of the four seasons and Time, comes from Ovid's "Metamorphoses". The composition, invented by Nicolas Poussin, says nothing of the tragic end awaiting young Phaeton. The identity of the painter who produced this early copy is unknown. The name of Eustache Le Sueur has been suggested on several occasions, due to his affection for the subject, which he painted on the ceiling of the Chambre des Muses in the Hôtel Lambert. However, his invention proposes a better conception of space, a more accentuated depth. He probably looked at Poussin's composition, but there's no evidence that he made a carbon copy for study purposes. Inventory number: PPP2544
