One of Ruisdael’s first signed and dated works, painted while he was a teenager, shows the artist’s daring and original approach to landscape. Rather than gently easing the viewer into the composition—a more conventional approach seen in the museum's work by his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael (1973.2)—Ruisdael masses dark forms in the foreground, barely penetrated by light, while opening up an expansive, sunlit plain at left.
