Launched on 29 December 1967, ‘Nicola’ was the first SD14 ship (Shelter Deck 14,000 tons deadweight) designed and built by Austin & Pickersgill Ltd to replace the ‘Liberty ships’ built by American yards for service during WWII. Successfully meeting demand for reliable, economical cargo ships, 211 were built in the 20 years that followed. Austin & Pickersgill Ltd commissioned Turners (photography) Ltd to take weekly progress shots documenting the construction from its beginning, in October 1967, to completion, in February 1968.
