Benedictional of St. Aethelwold Author: Godeman, scribe / Winchester; 971-984 Language: Latin Source/Shelfmark: Add. 49598, f.51v [Whole folio] Preface to the blessing for Easter Sunday; the Three Maries at the Sepulchre. The Angel, with a sceptre, sits at the entrance of the tomb, inside which the grave-clothes can be seen.The three women approach carrying ointment jars and a censor.The four soldiers, supposed to be guarding the tomb, are asleep. The scene is surrounded by a frame of 'Winchester' acanthus, with round bosses at each corner. Image taken from Benedictional of St. Aethelwold. Originally published/produced in Winchester; 971-984.
