In 1636, Post accompanied governor Johan Maurits to the Dutch colony of Brazil to record flora and fauna with other artists and scientists. He continued to paint Brazilian landscapes back home in Haarlem, often featuring local indigenous or enslaved populations as a mixture of fantasy and observation. Here Brazilians carry goods on their heads, African slaves sell crops, make music and dance guarded by two armed Europeans.
