Image description

Heroic end of a sea wolf. An Italian cargo of 1447 tons, the Peppinella, sank in the English Channel following a collision with a large Norwegian motor ship, the Sun Oak. The 19 crewmen were saved. The only victim was the commander, Captain Giuseppe Martinovich, aged 63. The valiant officer from Trieste saw all his men jump into the sea while the spear was dropped from the Norwegian motor ship that was supposed to pick them up. Martinovich didn't follow them. He wanted to stay on board his small ship. Then a very violent wave overwhelmed him. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 4 May 1958.
