Image description

Part of the 117 pieces of ancient Cambodian sandstone sculptures seized from smugglers are displayed in the Prachin Buri provincial museum, about 160 km northeast of Bangkok January 22. Thai police had on January 5 intercepted a truck near the eastern Thai-Cambodian border and found it carrying the sculptures dismantled from an Angkor-era temple in Banteay Chamar temple in the troubled Cambodian northwest. Thailand said it stood ready to return the Khmer sculptures as Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk called on premier Hun Sen to save the nation's national heritage and stop the theft and smuggling of ancient artefacts out of the country.
