Old and New Schleissheim Palace in Munich, 1938 (b/w photo)

Munich, Bavaria, Germany In the foreground is the Old Schleissheim Palace, in the middle the New Schleissheim Palace. The Old Schleissheim Palace is a rare example of a country residence of the late Renaissance. After heavy war destructions, the Palace was partly restored and partly reconstructed in 1972. The original was built by Schoen the Elder for Maximilian I between 1616-23. Today, the Old Palace is used as a branch of the Bavarian National Museum - among other things, with an East and West Prussia exhibition. With the New Palace the 'Blue Elector' Max Emanuel wanted to realize his imperial dreams of a vast royal residence. The architect Gaspare Zuccalli (1637-1717) began the construction of the New Palace in 1701, which was continued later by the young Joseph Effner (1687-1745) between 1719-26. French elegance is reflected not only in the facade, in the inside it triumphs entirely. Since 1978 the Palace houses the National Gallery of European Baroque painting.
