Image description

Whole artwork view. Massacreof the Niobids: the middle of the painting is dominated by a little temple under which rests a speckled female deer, symbol of Artemis; nearby, on a bench sit an old man with a horn of plenty, maybe the epitome of the river Cyterone, and nymph Gargaphia, who seem to ignore what happens all around them, while Pan shows astonishment for what he watch, gesticulating; Niobe's male sons escape disorderly in everey direction, by foot and on horseback; on the left, slaves continue their boar hunt firstly undertaken by the Niobids; from Casa del Marinaio.
