Video description

In the winter of 1943-44 RAF Bomber Command was flying into Germany nearly every night for a massive series of raids on key targets. Air Commodore H.I. Cozens filmed the strategic planning, preparation and execution of a raid on Berlin by Lancasters from No. 1 Group. The film includes scenes of a Lancaster undergoing an engine change, the work of armorers as they fit the Lancaster ‘V’ with bombs, and the collation of weather reports and the briefing of aircrew prior to the raid. These missions were very dangerous - with long, cold missions to Northern Germany and then difficult landing conditions back in England The documentary was made during the war, using colour film. It is believed to be the only colour film made during WW2 concerning the RAF. Although certain scenes had to be re-created for technical reasons, the raid is real and there are no actors.
