Image description

View Of The Lety Gypsy Camp Near Pisek In Southern Bohemia Circa 1940. The Camp Was Not Supervised By Germans But By Czech Members Of The So-Called Protectorate Police. The Lety Internment Camp Opened In 1940 With Czech And Roma Inmates. In 1942 Lety Was Converted Into A Camp Exclusively For Roma, And Conditions There Dramatically Worsened. The Camp Was Designed To Hold Between 200-300 Inmates, But At Its Peak 900 Inmates Were Crowded Inside. The Czech Commandant, Josef Janovsky, Ordered His Guards To Shoot Anyone Attempting Escape Or Disobeying Orders. At Least 300 Roma, Including All 35 Infants Born In The Camp, Died Of Malnutrition, Forced Labor, And Disease. Many Other Inmates Were Later Deported To Auschwitz In 1943.
