Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Manchester Meeting, 1866. Group photograph of John Penn, Joseph Whitworth (1803-1887), Robert Napier (1791-1876) and William Fairbairn (1789-1874) taken at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' Manchester Meeting in 1866. The Institution was founded in 1847 by a number of eminent mechanical engineers, including George Stephenson (1781-1848), who became its first president. Fairbairn, the 'father of experimental mechanics' followed George's son, Robert Stephenson (1803-1859), as president, and was succeeded by the pioneer machine-tool engineer Whitworth, and the great marine engineers Penn and Napier. Whitworth had been re-elected as President in 1866 when this picture was taken. Dimensions: 241mm x 203mm. ©SSPL/Science Museum
