Arion (main title); Orphée (old title (out of date))
Moreau, Gustave
The painting depicts the poet Arion, saved from drowning, being carried by a dolphin. Standing on the animal, richly dressed and crowned with a golden laurel wreath, he plucks the strings of his lyre, brandishing it above him. The rocks that line the horizon stand out against a stormy sky lit by the setting sun. Seagulls fly overhead.
