A Tragedy in the North. Winter Rain and Tears, 1975-1977 (epoxydic resin and acrylic gouache)
A Tragedy in the North. Winter, Rain and Tears (Une tragédie dans le nord. L'hiver, la pluie et les larmes), by Raymond Mason, 1975-1977, 20th Century, epoxydic resin and acrylic gouache, 288 x 320 x 134 cm
Whole artwork view. A visitor pays attention to a work, which commemorates an episode of the French history, that is the mining catastrophe happened in Liévin on 1974, December 27th; British-born, French artist Mason represents a tridimensional scene in which characters are stopped in a freeze-frame permeated by a surreal atmosphere; the spatial output, marked by the red edifices on the background and the perspective representation of the street, calls the attention on the two human figures in the foreground, in particular on the woman who is praying, in the middle fo the scene; behind her, a man standing on stretches his arm towards the viewer, as if he wanted to let him share in the common sorrow
