The story of Edwin and Angelina was told in an 18th-century poem by Oliver Goldsmith. Angelina was a Tyneside lady who rejected her sweetheart Edwin, but then regretted it. She set off on a journey through wild countryside, dressed as a man. On her travels, she met Edwin, who had become a hermit, dedicating his life to religious contemplation. John Martin was born at Haydon Bridge, Northumberland, and studied art in Newcastle. He painted a number of small, brightly coloured oil paintings like this in the early part of his career;
