Portrait of Thomas Drummond (1793-1835), coloured chalk on paper, by Daniel Macnee (1806-1882). Drummond was born in Angus c. 1793. He was the first Curator of Belfast Botanic Garden, 1828-31. Before this period, he became assistant naturalist to the second Land Arctic Expedition under Sir John Franklin from 1825-27. After 1831, he travelled to North America, to Canada and Texas, collecting specimens for Glasgow Botanic Gardens. He was the first person to botanise intensively in the Canadian Rockies, and he discovered Orobus niger. He died in Havana in Cuba, in February or March of 1835.
