The 1973 Chilean parliamentary elections, despite the triumph of the Confederation of Democracy (an alliance formed mainly by the National Party and the Christian Democratic Party), opposed the government of Salvador Allende. These elections are the last organized in a free and democratic way, before the 1973 coup and the dissolution of the congress by the military junta led by Augusto Pinochet, they could not be resumed until 17 years later in 1989. The Confederation of Democracy (Confederación de la Democracia or abbreviated as CODE) was a centre-right political coalition formed in July 1972 between the Christian Democratic Party of Chile, the National Party and a few other small political parties.
