Image description

Created after 1038, it was modelled after the Fatimid quarter-dinar of al-Mu'izz. The tarì, or quarter-dinar, struck by the Aghlabid caliphs in Sicily after their conquest of Syracuse in 878. On the obverse, these coins carry the Muslim profession of the faith, 'There is no God but God, Muhammad is the Prophet of God', while the reverse identifies the ruler and, in the outer ring, the mint and hegira date, reckoned in lunar years from Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina in July 622 AD
