Image description

A camp on the frontier, 1919 circa. Photograph by Randolph Bezzant Holmes (1888-1973), North West Frontier, Waziristan (1919-1920). A view of a temporary camp during operations on the frontier. During both the 3rd Afghan War (1919) and subsequent Revolt in Waziristan (1919-1920), the vast majority of the troops engaged were Indian. Battle casualties in the former conflict amounted to some 250 men killed and 650 wounded. There were also around 1000 deaths caused by disease. During the Waziristan campaign over 1300 men were killed in action or died from their wounds and sickness. From an album of 74 photographs, compiled by Neville John Gordon Cameron, 1st Bn Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1919 circa.
