Penelope Boothby died in 1791 at the age of 5, the adored only child of the English intellectual landowner, radical thinker, translator and patron of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Sir Brooke Boothby (1744-1824) and his wife, Susanna Bristoe; picture shows the moment when the soul of the little girl is guided to heaven by an angel; the broken vase and butterfly are symbolic of the short life of the little girl, who was educated according to the educational ideas of Rousseau in harmony with nature;
