On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Thence, just over the bridge, to 1800; at which period, and for some 50 years later, the South Quay was the habitat of half-pay officers and people from England, Ireland, and elsewhere who came here for cheap living. It was the "select" quarter then. 'The Guild', when founded in 1892, was 'The Fine Arts and Industrial Guild'. I was at that time organist of the Scots Kirk and have a bronze medal (as every member of the Choir had), certifying our success in the Church and Chapel competition. There is some talk now and again [of] introducing the 'Art' section, and probably the photo section also. The vogue in photo sections these days, is the vague, or impressionist style. Even for book illustrations. Many much out of focus and purposely so. This, Smagg's (deep sepia), and Fairy Ground ditto, might appeal. Mounted in the old deep green mounts I still have, this might bear the designation 'Bridging a Century'. It is quaint and weird enough for presentday requirements."
