During the Second World War, the community of Schwanden above Brienz set up a common soup kitchen as a means of saving money. A soup cook cooks about one hundred litres of soup every day. The offer is taken up by a large part of the Schwandener population, by poor as well as rich. At noon, the school children line up with their cauldrons to pick up soup for their families.
