The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC) flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries with an Asian capital at Batavia, now Jakarta, in Java. Banda island supplied mace and nutmeg. In 1621, Governor-General Coen punished the island for trading with other countries: all fifteen thousand islanders were killed or driven away. The ‘butcher of Banda’ divided the island into nutmeg plots, heavily guarded by forts.
