Image description

Soldiers of the 4th (Uganda) Battalion, The King’s African Rifles, manning a Bren gun in anti-aircraft configuration, 1939. Photograph, World War Two, East Africa, 1939. The Bren was the Commonwealth forces' primary infantry light machine gun (LMG) in World War Two. It was normally operated by a two man crew: a gunner to fire and carry the Bren, and a loader to reload the gun and replace the barrel when it overheated. The loader also carried extra ammunition and barrels. From an album of 608 photographs compiled by Colin Campbell of the King’s African Rifles.
