A mountain top lookout, manned by men of the 2nd Battalion, 102nd King Edward’s Own Grenadiers, at Domanda, 1919 circa. Photograph, North West Frontier, India, 1919 circa. The Indian soldiers are armed with the Short Magazine Lee Enfield rifle (SMLE), used by the Indian Army throughout both World Wars. Their outpost is surrounded by the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Waziristan, scene of much fierce fighting with Pathan tribesmen during the 3rd Afghan War (1919) and the subsequent tribal revolt.
