COMPANYS i JOVER, Lluis (1883-1940). Republican Catalan nationalist politician, president of the Generalitat from 1934 to 1940. He proclaimed the Republic of Catalonia in 1934. Exiled after the Civil War, he was captured in France by the Gestapo, at the request of the franquist police, and transferred to Spain, where he was tortured, submitted to a council of war and finally shot in the castle of Montjuic. Second Spanish Republic.
