Advance near Hawthorne Ridge, 1 July 1916. Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916. Soldiers of the 16th (Service) Battalion (Public Schools), The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) are just visible in the distance having reached the crater on Hawthorn Ridge near Beaumont Hamel on the Somme. That day the battalion, along with other units of 29th Division, sustained heavy losses during their failed assault. From an album of 19 official photographs of the 1st, 1/7th, 16th, and the 25th Battalions of the Middlesex Regiment.
