Image description

By Unknown The Cornwall Railway line opened in 1859 and extended to Falmouth in 1863. The route cuts across numerous deep river valleys and in order to reduce expenditure the river crossings took the form of wooden viaducts of timber deck spans supported by fans of timber bracing on masonry piers. Replacement of the timber viaducts by all-masonry structures began in the 1870s.
