Chromolithograph recruiting poster, artist unknown, issued by the Publicity Department, Central Recruiting Depot, Whitehall, World War One, 1914. This poster depicts the Houses of Parliament from the South Bank of the River Thames. Propaganda posters helped persuade men to enlist. As in the rest of Europe, the outbreak of the First World War was greeted with popular acclaim in Britain. Around 30,000 men were enlisting every day by the end of August 1914. Text transcription: 'MEN OF LONDON!/ EACH RECRUIT/ MEANS/ QUICKER PEACE/ JOIN TO-DAY/ GOD SAVE THE KING'.
