Image description

Battle of Bad Axe, Aug. 1-2, 1832, was the final battle of the Black Hawk War. 500 Sauk (Sac) and Fox warriors, women and children were defeated and retreating to the west side of the Mississippi. The United States Army regulars and militia followed them to engage in a one-sided fight from a steamboat with artillery. 70 settlers and US soldiers died in the four month war, while half of Black Hawk's original band of 11,000 died of wounds or hardship
