In April of 1846 Colonel Trueman Cross, Assistant Quartermaster General of Taylor's Army was out riding alone near Brownsville, Texas when he was ambushed and killed by Mexican Guerillas armed with lances. He was the first American officer killed in the Mexican-American War (1846-48).
